The NISHATI Project, meaning Energy in Swahili, is an international capacity-building initiative designed to foster innovation, skills development, and sustainable education across six African universities, two each in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. The project focuses on strengthening academic and professional competencies in eco-agriculture, water management, and green energy for agriculture, responding directly to regional development priorities and labour market needs.
Implemented by a ten-member consortium coordinated by Sapienza University of Rome, NISHATI brings together European and African universities alongside industry partners, including the University of Cádiz in Spain, Hydrowatt, and Studio Santi Srl in Italy. The project enhances educational offerings through curriculum modernization, introduction of new courses, and the development of transversal skills, particularly in entrepreneurship, innovation, and green economic development.
At its core, NISHATI adopts an innovative triangle-based teaching approach that integrates theoretical knowledge, practical competencies, and training of local trainers. Through green laboratories, community engagement, and stakeholder networks, the project supports sustainable growth, job creation, and long-term professional competitiveness in line with Green Deal principles and sustainable development goals.
